issue here, we just -- a few days away, things have to -- things don't move quickly in washington as we know. there are rules in both houses of when things can come up, how much time has to pass for debate. they have to change rules to get it through quickly. even if senate comes up with the deal. mcconnell and harry reid come up with the deal. they accept it to the house on sunday night, monday morning. what are the chances of them getting their ducks in a row, boehner getting his ducks in a row and us still being able to avoid the krif? >> right. we should have a better sense of that by tomorrow afternoon when they start to reconvene. speaker boehner made it clear at the meeting at the white house on friday, anything that the senate passes will be considered by the house, might be amended, might be changed a bit. has to go back to the senate quick for changes. but he said will indeed be considered. the question, can perhaps all the democrats plus at least some republicans, come together to pass something while a bunch of conservative republicans will oppose it, because it's raising ta

don't rule out total ly washington coming to its senses, but i have to say at the moment that the odds look rather against it. but there is still another option which people are not considering at the moment, and that is that we get a deal before the 12th congress wraps up on the 3rd of january, but after the 1i of january. the bush tax cuts expire and then the house republicans, who are in my view the real source of the problem here, we saw what happened last week when boehner tried to push something through. the house republicans want to cut taxes rather than raising taxes. but frankly, i think this is going to the 113th congress from where we are today the. do you think we're going to feel it on the real economy in the first quarter? are we going to see this slight cautiousness feeding through in how -- >> well, first of all, we are seeing it on the u.s. economy already. there's no question about that. it has happened a distinct impact on corporate america's willingness to invest over the past several months, some say over the past year. that's likely to continue. even if we get a d

gorani here in washington, d.c. in for brooke baldwin. grief today is shattering the christmas eve quiet on a sleepy town in new york. this is how it looked around 6:00 in the morning today. there was a massive house fire that ravaged homes overlooking lake ontario. the house fire spread as firefighters tried to dodge gunfire. the firefighters apparently walked into a trap just as they were responding to this. at last word, two firefighters are dead, three other first responders are wounded, and alleged gunman is dead. authorities can't say whether other bodies might be found in the eight homes destroyed or damaged by the fire in the town of webster. shocking, bizarre, tragic today. cnn's poppy harlow is in new york, trying to piece together this horrible chain of events here on christmas eve. so what happened, because authorities are saying potentially this was a trap laid out for the firefighters. >> that's what the police chief gerald pickering said in the last press conference, we're awaiting right now another press conference that should start any minute. but he did say that it appe
